When I was younger, my skincare routine used to take forever. With all the steps I had, I was setting my alarm earlier to budget enough time to get it all done. Time aside, it was also expensive to maintain, and honestly, I couldn’t tell which products were making a real difference to my skin’s feel and appearance. It’s easy to fall down the skincare rabbit hole, believe me: I used to take every recommendation thrown my way by influencers or served to me on a platter of internet virality.
Less is More
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve started to realize that less is more, especially when it comes to skincare. Investing in a simple skincare routine that makes a real difference, rather than products that look cute on my vanity, has led to the biggest improvement in my skin. So, what skincare products do you actually need? Let’s break down the essentials for a quick, solid, and effective daily skincare routine anyone can follow.
Your Essentials Skincare Routine
Step 1: Cleanser (The Foundation of Any Skincare Routine)
Think of cleansing as the foundational step of your skincare routine. Whether you’re wearing makeup, hitting the gym, or stepping out to run an errand, your skin is exposed to all sorts of impurities on a daily basis that water alone can’t get rid of. A cleanser removes impurities, leaving a fresh canvas that allows your other products to penetrate more effectively. I’m always a fan of a gentle hydrating cleanser that keeps my skin barrier hydrated and looking plump!
Step 2: Toners & Serums (Targeting Specific Needs)
Skincare can be a game of choose-your-own-adventure, so if you want to keep your daily routine super simple, then skip ahead to step three. For those feeling a bit extra, let's dive into step 2.
Toners help remove lingering impurities and balance your skin’s pH to support a healthy skin barrier while targeting specific needs like texture or brightening. Like a cleanser, toners make your skin even more receptive to the benefits of other products you may use, which brings me to Serums.
Serums, used after toner, are targeted treatments that absorb into the skin and penetrate deeply to address specific concerns. As someone with melanin-rich skin, I love using a serum that targets hyperpigmentation or dark spots like Bolden’s Dark Spot Fix.
Step 3: Moisturizer (Locking Everything In)
Here’s where we’re at: we know that cleansing sets you up for success, and toners and serums target specific needs. What's the next step? Moisturizer, to lock everything in.
Moisturizer helps with all sorts of things: it protects your skin barrier (your skin’s first line of defense that keeps harmful things out), prevents dryness, promotes skin healing, and slows signs of aging, to name a few things. Moisturizers can target multiple things at once, but I always encourage finding one that, at its baseline, supports and nourishes your skin barrier. Bolden formulated the F-Hydra Moisturizer to do just that.
Step 4: Sunscreen (The Ultimate Protection)
If nothing else, everyone should be wearing SPF every day! Even if you aren’t lucky enough to be sunning yourself in the tropics, your skin is still exposed to sunlight and UV rays daily (yes, even if it’s overcast or you spend most of the day indoors).
The last step of your routine, applying SPF is essential to keeping your skin healthy. Daily use protects from the most dangerous risks, like skin cancer, and the more superficial ones, like premature aging. We recommend using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. For our minimalists, we offer a Sunscreen Moisturizer so you can combine steps 3 and 4 into one.
The Takeaway
So, a simple skincare routine includes cleansing, targeted treatment, moisturizing, and daily sun protection, and simple can often be the most effective! Finding products in each of these four categories, or three if you prefer, that work for you will help you build a quick skincare routine that works for your skin, your time, and your budget. It’s important to remember that skincare isn’t one-size-fits-all. We all have different skin types and needs, so find the products that work best for you and give them a little time to see results.
