How to Make Sure Your Black Does Not Crack

by Chinelo And Ndidi November 04, 2017

Celebrities we love from Nia Long to Pharrell Williams swear that exfoliating is the secret to their youthful looking skin, and we have to agree. Exfoliation takes skin from good to radiant by sloughing off dead skin, revealing new and glowing skin underneath.

Here are 5 reasons why you should be exfoliating:

  1. Fades dark spots by increasing cell turnover, which reveals new skin
  2. Keeps acne at bay--the exfoliating process helps to clean out blocked pores which cause acne
  3. Improves dry skin by allowing your moisturizers and serums work better
  4. Improves the appearance of the skin--regular use of exfoliants helps the skin become firmer and smoother
  5. Reduces the incidence of in-grown hair post shave

What to look out for:
There are two broad categories under which exfoliators fall. Mechanical exfoliators work by physically sloughing of dead skin using ground up grains or nuts included in facial scrubs--think of how sandpaper works, while Chemical exfoliators use enzymes and acids to breakdown dead skin cells by weakening the bond between the dead cells on the surface of the skin. Contrary to popular opinion, chemical exfoliants are actually more gentle and effective than the mechanical exfoliants.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) are a type of chemical exfoliant. AHAs like glycolic acid and lactic acid exfoliate the surface cells of the skin and are a great way to achieve the skin turnover required to reduce hyperpigmentation.

Bolden Nighttime Repair Serum with 10% Glycolic Acid

Most people find that they can tolerate over-the-counter 10% glycolic acid products every two or three nights, or every night when mixed with moisturizer (Tip: it works really well with any of our Shea Oils). You can also use it during the day but make sure to apply a good SPF 30 moisturizer over it. It was designed to work well with our SPF 30 Brightening Moisturizer which will be available soon.

After you try it out, please reach out to us and share how it's working for you. We love to hear from you!
