The biggest difference is water.
Body lotion is a mix of water and oils, plus ingredients like glycerin that help your skin hold on to water. That combination is why lotion can hydrate and soften at the same time.
Body oil has little or no water. It softens skin and slows down how much water escapes from it. Licensed esthetician Natasha Gayle says that's why body oil works best on skin that's still a little wet from the shower: it has water to hold in.
| Body Lotion | Body Oil | |
|---|---|---|
| Contains water | Yes | Little to none |
| Texture | Light, absorbs quickly | Silky, glides over skin |
| Main job | Hydrates and softens | Softens and slows moisture loss |
| When to apply | On damp skin after bathing | On damp skin, or over lotion |
| Feel under clothes | Usually dry to the touch fast | Can feel slick if you use too much |
For dry skin, you don't have to pick one.
Which Is Better for Dry Skin: Body Oil or Lotion?
Here's a simple test. If you put on lotion after your shower and don't think about your skin again until bedtime, your lotion is doing its job. Keep it.
If you're moisturized at 8 a.m. and ashy again by lunch, your routine needs more help. You have three options:
- 1Add body oil over your lotion.
- 2Switch to a richer body cream.
- 3Use body oil on its own, on damp skin.

Can You Use Body Oil Instead of Lotion?
Plenty of people do. The key is to put it on damp skin, since oil holds water in rather than adding it.
Try it for a few days. If your skin feels tight or dry by the afternoon, put a lotion or cream underneath and use the oil on top.
How to Layer Body Oil and Lotion (and When to Apply)
Lotion goes on first. Oil goes on last.
The best time is right after your shower, using what we call Shower → Pat → Moisturize:
1Shower
Shower in warm water, not hot.
2Pat
Pat your skin with a towel so it's still a little damp. Don't rub it completely dry.
3Moisturize
Moisturize within a few minutes. Put on your lotion or cream if you use one, then smooth a small amount of body oil over it. Or skip the lotion and go straight to oil.
This follows the American Academy of Dermatology's advice: warm water, pat dry, and moisturize while skin is still damp to trap water in it.
Give extra attention to your legs, knees, elbows and feet. They usually show dryness first.
One practical note: if you put oil on in the shower, watch your step. Oil on tile is slippery.

What About Body Cream?
If your skin is very dry, cream deserves a look. Creams are thicker than lotions, and the AAD recommends a cream or ointment over a lotion for dry skin because they do a better job of holding in moisture.
Think of lotion and cream as your base layer, with cream being the heavier of the two. Body oil can be your base layer or the last layer on top. If lotion plus oil still isn't enough, try cream with a little oil over it.
How Much Body Oil Should You Use?
Less than you think. About 2 pumps should cover one leg and on damp skin, a small amount spreads much farther than it does on dry skin.
Massage it in and give it a minute before you get dressed. If your clothes are sticking to you five minutes later, you used too much. Cut back next time.
Oil can transfer to fabric before it absorbs. If you moisturize at night, wait a few minutes before getting into bed.
What to Look for in a Body Oil for Dry Skin
You should be able to read it and know why each ingredient is there. If your skin is sensitive, fewer ingredients means fewer things that could bother it.
Know the base oil.
The first ingredient is most of what's in the bottle, whether that's mineral oil, a plant oil like shea, or a blend. If you already know your skin likes shea butter, shea oil is an easy place to start.
Fragrance-free if your skin is easily irritated.
The AAD recommends fragrance-free products for dry skin. If you like scent, choose an oil that tells you exactly where the scent comes from.
How it feels at 3 p.m., not just at application.
Any oil feels nice going on. What matters is whether your skin still feels comfortable hours later, and whether you can stand how it feels under your clothes. If you hate the texture, you won't use it every day.

Where Bolden Shea Oil Fits
Shea butter is thick and solid at room temperature. Bolden Shea Oil gives you shea in a liquid you can spread over your arms and legs in seconds. It's the liquid part of shea butter, separated out so it stays pourable.
The ingredient lists are short on purpose:
- Unscented (Fragrance Free): shea and vitamin E. That's it.
- Sweet Vanilla: shea, vitamin E and vanilla essential oil.
Use it on damp skin after your shower, over the lotion or cream you already own, or just on the spots that get driest.
Unscented Shea Oil
Two ingredients, no added fragrance. The one to choose if your skin is sensitive or you want your body care to smell like nothing.

So, Body Oil or Lotion?
If lotion keeps you moisturized all day, keep using it. There's no reason to add steps you don't need.
If you're dry or ashy again a few hours later, add body oil over your lotion. If your skin is very dry, switch to a cream as your base. And if oil alone on damp skin keeps you comfortable, that's your routine.
Either way, the test is the same: is your skin still moisturized at the end of the day?
Shop Bolden Shea Oil →Quick Answers About Body Oil vs. Lotion
Is body oil better than lotion for dry skin?+
Neither is automatically better. Lotion adds water to your skin, and oil helps keep it there. For dry skin, using both often works better than either one alone.
Does body oil stain clothes or sheets?+
It can transfer before it absorbs. Use a small amount on damp skin and wait a few minutes before getting dressed or into bed.
Can I use body oil if I get body acne?+
Start on your arms and legs and see how your skin responds before using it on your chest or back.
Is shea oil safe if I have a nut allergy?+
Shea comes from the nut of the shea tree. If you have a tree nut allergy, talk to your doctor before using it, and patch test first.
Can I put body oil on wet skin?+
Damp is better than dripping. Pat off the extra water, then apply before your skin dries completely.
